Home-Brewed Kombucha Recipe: Easy, Probiotic-Rich Fermented Tea
Home-Brewed Kombucha Recipe: Easy, Probiotic-Rich Fermented Tea
Introduction
Home-brewed Kombucha is a refreshing, probiotic-rich fermented tea that supports gut health and digestion. Made by fermenting sweetened green or black tea with a SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast), kombucha develops a tangy, fizzy texture. You can customize it with fruity flavors like ginger, blueberry, or citrus for a delicious twist. Brewing your own kombucha at home is not only cost-effective but also allows you to control the flavor and fermentation process for a perfect batch every time!

Ingredients:
- 8 cups filtered water
- 4 black or green tea bags
- 1/2 cup white sugar (feeds the fermentation process)
- 1 SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast)
- 1 cup starter tea (from a previous batch or store-bought raw kombucha)
- 1 cup fruit juice or fresh fruit (for flavoring, optional)
- 1 tbsp grated ginger or crushed blueberries (optional)
Instructions:
- Brew the Sweet Tea – Boil the water, remove from heat, and steep the tea bags for 5-10 minutes. Stir in the sugar until fully dissolved. Let the tea cool to room temperature.
- Transfer to a Fermentation Jar – Pour the cooled tea into a large glass jar. Add the SCOBY and starter tea to help kickstart the fermentation process.
- Ferment the Kombucha – Cover the jar with a breathable cloth secured with a rubber band. Place in a warm, dark place (70-80°F) for 7-10 days. Taste after 7 days; ferment longer for a tangier flavor.
- Second Fermentation (Optional – for carbonation & flavors) – Remove the SCOBY, strain, and transfer the kombucha to airtight bottles. Add fruit juice, ginger, or blueberries for extra flavor. Seal the bottles and ferment for 3-5 more days at room temperature. Refrigerate before serving.
- Enjoy! – Serve chilled and enjoy your homemade probiotic-rich kombucha!
