Smash Burgers are crispy, thin, and juicy with perfectly caramelized edges and a rich, beefy flavor. Unlike traditional burgers, these are smashed flat on a hot griddle, creating a crispy crust while keeping the inside tender.

For the Burger Patties:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 fat ratio for juiciness)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder (optional)

For the Burger Sauce (Optional, But Delicious! 🍔)

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp pickle relish
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika

For Assembly:

  • 4 burger buns (potato buns or brioche work best)
  • 4 slices American cheese (or cheddar)
  • 1/2 cup shredded lettuce (optional)
  • 1 small onion, finely diced (for extra flavor)
  • Pickles (optional, but recommended)
  • Butter for toasting the buns

Step 1: Prep the Beef Patties

  1. Divide ground beef into 4 equal balls (about ÂĽ lb each).
  2. Do not press or shape into patties—leave them as loose balls for better smashing.
  3. Season each beef ball with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.

Step 2: Heat the Griddle or Skillet

  1. Heat a cast-iron skillet, griddle, or flat-top pan over high heat until very hot.
  2. Lightly grease the pan with butter or oil (optional).

Step 3: Smash the Burgers

  1. Place one beef ball onto the hot skillet.
  2. Immediately smash it down using a burger press, large spatula, or a heavy pan.
  3. Press hard for 10 seconds until the patty is thin and about ÂĽ inch thick.
  4. Repeat for the remaining patties.

Step 4: Cook the Patties

  1. Let each patty cook for 2 minutes without moving—this creates the crispy crust.
  2. Flip the patty and immediately place a slice of cheese on top.
  3. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the cheese melts.
  4. Remove from heat and let rest for a minute.

Step 5: Toast the Buns

  1. Spread butter on the inside of each bun.
  2. Toast on the skillet until golden brown and slightly crispy.

Step 6: Assemble Your Smash Burger!

  1. Spread burger sauce on both buns.
  2. Add shredded lettuce, pickles, and onions (optional).
  3. Place the smash burger patty with melted cheese on top.
